Aikido of Charlotte The Demko Experience...Top Notch!

Well, I just got back from dropping off Andy Demko, 7th Dan, Shihan and his son Andrew, 4th Dan, Fukushidoin at the aiport.  I was honored and pleased to host them at my house and along with our Chief Instructor, Dennis Main, 5th Dan, Shidoin at our dojo this past weekend.  As usual, the instruction was top notch and you can clearly see from that the apple does not fall far from…

Serguei Cherstiouk Another way of learning break falls

What I like about this sequence of exercises - they look safe and each next step is just a little bit harder, so you can learn gradually.

Also it teaches exactly what I was missing - how to roll your body after you hit the mat with your back hand.

Dennis Main USAF Spring Seminar in Atlanta::March 25/27, 2011

Aikido of Charlotte

First want to thank Sensei's Blue Spruell and George Kennedy for putting together an action packed seminar. I know they are both proud of being able to set aside any differences they made have had in the past with politics or egos and work…

Aikido of Charlotte A Fun and Successful Trip to Atlanta for the Yamada Sensei Seminar

We had 8 members of our dojo attend the annual USAF Atlanta Seminar featuring Yamada Shihan this past weekend.  I can speak for everyone when I say that the trip went extremely well.  First and foremost, it was great to have such a positive turnout from our dojo support this great seminar where one of our members, Jim Hyde tested and was promoted to Shodan (First Degree Black Belt).  He's been training diligently for the past 5 years and was more than prepared.  Kudos to one of our black…

Jim Hyde Breathing and testing

I noticed recently during my dan practice tests that my endurance seemed to be improving a lot.  Now, running through a 20 minutes dan test every class is definitely a great way to build one's stamina, but I think that another factor that's contributing is improving my breathing.  For whatever reason, i think that everyone tends to hold their breath during nage-waza and if you find yourself out of breath after nage-waza, that's most likely the culprit.  People tend to hold their breath…

Serguei Cherstiouk Breathing

I've been hearing this advise again and again - synchronize the execution of your technique with your breath. And it does not make any sense for me. People normally breath with regular intervals 0.5-2 sec, depending on the need of oxygen. How can this be synchronized with attacks of your opponent(s)?  In fact I'd prefer to keep my breath as even as possible, which is a part of a state of balance.

Aikido of Charlotte The Black Belt Test

USAF Dan Testing

Several of our students have inquired about Dan testing (Black Belt Testing) in our organization. So I thought I would share my opinion and experience on this matter. It normally takes anywhere from 4-7 years with diligent practice to be ready to take a Shodan exam. There are some…

Serguei Cherstiouk Minutes from Eddie Hagihara seminar at Water Oak Aikikai, 05/14/2010

1. When you do aikido with love - this is what it is really about.

Smooth techniques are a basement, but they are not very specific to

aikido, all martial arts have valid set of techniques. And you may spend all your life exploring and polishing them. But when you

start doing them with care for your partner, then you may achieve new results - in your personal development in general, and in

aikido in particular. Tendency to demonstrate "power", to throw… Continue

Aikido of Charlotte Seminar at Open Sky Aikikai - Jan 16

So 6 of us from the dojo took a trip up to Open Sky Aikikai to support their seminar with Hal Lehrman, 7th Dan, Shihan and Claire Keller, 5th Dan, Shidoin. As usual, the instruction was top notch and a lot of fun. Keller Sensei focused on the basics while Lehrman Sensei really focused on body position and explained his goal of becoming a large Sphere when disabling ukes attack. Both Instructors are regular teachers at NY Aikikai… Continue

We've recently uncovered an antique tape with Main sensei teaching self defense class. Jonathan sensei converted it to DVD. I made several copies. Will put on the table in the dojo. Very worth watching. Especially for those with long hairs.

Aikido of Charlotte A 5th Dan visitor from NY....wow!

I received a phone call from an aikidoka who was visiting our area last week. I was out of town but when I came back on Monday to teach my class, he showed up for the 2nd time. I soon learned he was a 5th Dan, had been practicing for over 20 years and was a student of Yamada Shihan and Konigsberg Shihan. I was fortunate to have our senior students in class so I felt he would have a good opportunity to train at a decent level. Well, I kept the… Continue
