What does Sempai | Kohai mean to you in Aikido?

In the movie, Rising Sun, Sean Connery educates Wesley Snipes on the Sempai/Kohai relationship. What does the term Sempai | Kohai mean to you in the Aikido community?

one can ask after some years of Aikido practice: I am sempai or kohai ?
I'd say after the second day of your training you're both and you'll remain both forever. You keep practicing (learning) and at the same time teaching (even if you do not intend/recognize to be teaching, just being there and prcaticing). In one minute you're sempai, in the next kohai as you go along the way (DO). Just do it, I mean just keep going!
